About Me

Bernard is an emerging nurse scientist with academic and professional roots in Ghana, Canada, and the United States. He brings extensive clinical and research experience in global health, with a particular focus on chronic disease inequities. Currently a doctoral student in Nursing at Yale University, his work centers on mitigating the global burden of cardiometabolic conditions among populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

His current research is a cross-sectional study examining how social determinants of health influence sleep health and its components, as well as type 2 diabetes (T2D) management, among adults living with T2D in LMICs, with particular attention to Ghana. He is especially interested in how structural, social, and cultural contexts shape sleep quality, sleep patterns, and self-management behaviors, and how these in turn affect glycemic control and long-term health outcomes.

Bernard's academic interests are grounded in a critical understanding of how non-communicable diseases disproportionately affect underserved communities. In LMICs, including his native Ghana, health disparities are intensified by under-resourced health systems, limited access to care, and complex socio-environmental determinants. Drawing on clinical practice in Ghana, exposure to the Canadian healthcare system, and advanced training in the United States, he is committed to developing culturally responsive, context-specific interventions that advance equity in chronic disease prevention and management.

He is also the founder of NephroHaven Foundation, a Ghanaian nonprofit transforming access to chronic kidney disease (CKD) care through a scalable, hybrid-powered dialysis model tailored to low-resource settings. NephroHaven centers combine national-grid and solar energy systems to reduce power interruptions, lower operating costs, and ensure continuity of care. The foundation partners with government agencies, insurance bodies, and private sector stakeholders to implement tiered payment systems, provide subsidies through a solidarity fund, and offer free dialysis sessions for children. Its model integrates mental health support, early CKD screening, nurse-led workforce development, and data-driven evaluation to deliver high-quality, equitable, and sustainable kidney care for all Ghanaians.

Featured in WHO Global Hypertension Report 2025

Delighted to have contributed to groundbreaking research featured in the World Health Organization's Global Hypertension Report 2025.

Study Focus:

Our comprehensive study assessed how prepared primary health facilities in Ghana are to manage hypertension and diabetes, revealing strong service availability but critical gaps in diagnostic capacity, workforce training, and resources.

Key Findings & Impact:

These findings underscore the urgent need to strengthen primary care systems to prevent and control cardiovascular diseases across low- and middle-income settings. This work contributes to a global effort advancing evidence-based action toward better heart health for all.
